How it started…

Ethically stitched was founded in Autumn 2025 by me, Hannah, after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sustainable Development from the University of the Highlands and Islands. I’ve been sewing for almost as long as I can remember, and wanted to combine my love of the craft with my ambition to make ethical, eco-friendly living more accessible.

A different way of working

Ethically stitched aims to reduce textile waste. Unlike many brands, sustainability isn't an afterthought - it's at the heart of the business. Each handbag or accessory sold here is either handmade using carefully-sourced pre-owned materials, or 2nd hand and repaired. All materials are reused, repaired or upcycled in a way that minimises waste while at the same time ensuring the finished item is of high quality.

The goal is not just to limit negative impacts on the planet, it's to have a positive impact through keeping materials out of landfill while also reducing the need for new materials to be manufactured.

Why bother?

When I read or hear about the many problems caused by fast fashion - such as its contribution to climate change, the communities flooded with textile waste, and the unjust working conditions faced by many in the industry - it can feel like they are far too big for someone like me to be able to make any real difference. But my motivation for caring about the environment is rooted in my faith in Christ. I have hope because I know that there is a time coming when all the social and environmental problems facing our world will no longer exist — not because of political or technological solutions, but because Christ is coming back and will make everything right. In the meantime, I believe I am called as a Christian to do what I can to care for the environment and to make ethical choices — not out of fear of what will happen if I don't, but out of love for God, for people and for all that God has created.
